Prahlad, Holika, and what the fire keeps

Hiranyakashipu had a boon that made him nearly unkillable and a son who would not stop saying Narayana. Threats failed, elephants failed, poison failed. So the king's sister Holika, whose own boon made fire harmless to her, sat in the flames with the boy in her lap. The fire read the fine print: her immunity held only when she entered fire alone. Holika burned; Prahlad, eyes closed on the name, walked out. The Dahan every mohalla lights on the Purnima evening is that verdict re-announced yearly — bhakti outsits power — and the ash of the fire is taken home as its blessing.

Holika Dahan, step by step — and the Bhadra rule

   Raise the pyre

   Days ahead, the mohalla gathers wood and upla at the crossing; a Prahlad figure or branch is set at the heart of the pile in many towns, to be pulled out before lighting — the point is what survives.

   Mind the Bhadra

   The one timing rule every panchang states: the Dahan is lit in the Purnima's Pradosh window AVOIDING Bhadra — the karana the shastra bars for fire rites. Bhadra's span is city- and year-specific; check your city's window on the live panchang rather than any printed list.

   The puja

   Before lighting: roli, akshat, flowers, a kalash of water, the new season's grain — wheat ears and chana roasted in the flames later — and the parikrama with raw cotton thread wound around the pyre.

   The fire, and its ash

   The pyre is lit after the puja; families offer the season's grain to the flames and roast the first chana and wheat. Next morning, a pinch of the cooled ash is taken home — the old protective custom applies it as tilak.

Dhulandi — the morning of colours

The morning after the fire has no vidhi — that is its vidhi. Gulal first to the elders' feet, then to everyone's face; pichkaris and water for the brave; thandai, gujiya and dahi bhalla on every table; and the one social rule the day was built for: bura na mano, Holi hai. The festival's oldest function is amnesty — quarrels are ended by colouring the other person, rank dissolves for a morning, and the year's accounts of resentment are closed in pink. By afternoon the colours wash off; what the tradition hopes stays washed is underneath.

Herbal gulal, and colours kept out of eyes and mouths — the day's one modern rule. Oil the hair and skin before; the colours leave faster than the regrets they replace.

Braj's forty days — lathmar to phoolon-wali

In Braj, Holi is not a day but a season, opened at Vasant Panchami and crescendoing through the week before the Purnima: Barsana's Laddoo Holi and then the Lathmar — Radha's village answering Nandgaon's men with staves, the old teasing of Krishna re-fought in play; Vrindavan's widows' Holi at Gopinath temple, a modern reclamation; the Phoolon-wali at Banke Bihari, colours of flowers alone; Mathura's processions; and Dauji's Huranga the day after everyone else has finished. The theology underneath is simple: colour is what Krishna's love looks like when it refuses to respect boundaries.

Holashtak — and the muhurat calendar's reopening

The eight days from Phalguna Shukla Ashtami to the Dahan are Holashtak, and across most of North India the muhurat calendar pauses through them: no weddings, no griha pravesh, no new beginnings — the tradition remembers these as the days Prahlad was tormented, and gives them to the festival's build-up instead. The pause ends WITH the Dahan: from the morning of colours the calendar reopens, and the spring wedding stretch runs on toward the season's close at Devshayani in July. The jyotish frame of the Purnima

Holi's astronomy mirrors Sharad Purnima's, half a year on: a full Moon at winter's other door. On the Phalguna Purnima the Moon typically stands in or near its friend Mercury's territory around Uttara Phalguni–Hasta, opposite a Sun finishing its Kumbha run — the year's last full Moon of the cold half, with paksha-bala complete. The tradition's reading of the bonfire is graha-flavoured too: fire rites on a Bhadra-free Pradosh evening burn the year's accumulated tamas — which is why the same evening carries the old custom of consigning one written grudge or fear to the flames. What the fire takes, the colours next morning are free to replace.
