The birth the epic dates

The Valmiki Ramayana gives Rama's birth a fuller horoscope than any other figure of the tradition receives: the ninth of Chaitra's bright half, the Punarvasu nakshatra, five grahas exalted, Karka lagna rising with Guru and the Moon together in it — and the texts place the moment at madhyahna, when the Sun stands highest. That is why Ram Navami's celebration peaks at midday, not midnight: temples perform the janmotsav as the madhyahna window arrives for their city, the conch sounds, and the cradle is unveiled. The window is city-specific — the live panchang computes it; the rule, not a clock time, is the tradition.

The day, step by step

   Morning

   Bath, sankalp, and the ninth-day Navratri worship — Siddhidatri's day — flowing into Rama's; homes set the jhanki: the cradle, the infant image, tulsi and flowers.

   The path

   The Bal Kand's birth passages, the Ram Raksha Stotra, and in many homes the full akhand path concluding today; kirtans hold the name — Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.

   Madhyahna janmotsav

   At the midday window: the birth declared, aarti, the cradle rocked, panjiri-panchamrit distributed — the day's central act.

   The evening

   Shobha yatras and Ram-baraats in the towns; the vrat's parana per family custom — on the Navami itself in most homes, next morning in some.

Ayodhya on this day

Ram Navami is Ayodhya's own day: lakhs take the Saryu snan at dawn, the Janmabhoomi temple performs the janmotsav at madhyahna — in recent years with the surya-tilak, a mirror-guided beam of midday sun brought to the deity's forehead at the birth moment — and the city's thousands of temples ring the same hour. For the tradition's other Ram centres — Bhadrachalam with its kalyanam, Sitamarhi, Rameshwaram — the day is the year's summit too. Attending any Ram temple at its madhyahna is the pilgrimage's home form.

The vrat

• Many keep the Navami as the ninth fast of Chaitra Navratri; others keep Ram Navami alone — a phalahar day until the madhyahna janmotsav, then prasad.
• The day's classic prayers: for a son's virtues in one's children, for the household's maryada — the Ram tradition's word for kept boundaries — and for deliverance from fear.
• Kanya pujan where the family joins it to the Navratri; daan of food in Rama's name — the tradition holds anna-daan on this Navami especially fruitful.

When the classics want to show what a great chart looks like, they cite this one: Karka lagna with an exalted Guru and the Moon in it, the Sun exalted in Mesha in the tenth, Mars in Makara, Saturn in Tula, Venus in Meena — five grahas in exaltation around a lagna whose lord sits with Jupiter. Closing the Navratri

Ram Navami ends the spring Navratri: the barley sown at ghatasthapana is harvested and distributed, the kalash is ceremonially emptied, kanya pujan completes the Devi's worship, and the new year stands nine disciplined days old. The next stations of the season follow quickly — Hanuman Jayanti on the Chaitra Purnima five days later, and the summer wedding wave running through April and May.
