Why the year begins here

The Chaitra Shukla Pratipada is the tradition's most-cited first day: the Brahma Purana holds creation itself began on it, and the Shalivahana Shaka — the era the Deccan's calendars count — opens here. Spring stands at the door, the rabi harvest is home, and the almanac's new volume begins. Where North India's business new year runs from Kartik (Diwali's Annakut day), the Deccan's civil-religious year runs from today — one more reminder that India keeps several new years, each with its own logic.

Raising the gudi, step by step

   The bath and the door

   The day opens with the abhyanga snan — the oil bath — and a rangoli at the cleaned threshold.

   Dress the staff

   A bamboo staff takes a bright silk cloth — commonly green or saffron — then neem and mango sprigs, a sugar-crystal garland (gathi), and an inverted silver or copper pot crowning it.

   Raise and worship

   The gudi is raised at the door or a window, leaning skyward, and worshipped with haldi-kumkum and flowers — Brahma's flag for the year's creation, the household's for its victories.

   The neem and the sweet

   Neem leaves with jaggery are tasted first — the year accepted bitter and sweet together — and the feast follows: shrikhand-puri, puran poli.

   Take it down by sunset

   The gudi stands the day and is respectfully taken down around sunset, with a prasad offered — a flag flown, not left.

Ugadi — the pachadi and the panchanga

Ugadi's table teaches its philosophy in one bowl. The ugadi pachadi mixes six tastes — neem's bitter, jaggery's sweet, tamarind's sour, chilli's heat, salt, and raw mango's tang — and everyone eats all six: the year will bring all of them, and the family accepts the whole in advance. The day's other centrepiece is the panchanga shravanam: after the puja, the new almanac is read aloud — the year's rains, harvests, and the fortunes of each rashi — in temples by the priest, at home by an elder. Bevu-bella in Karnataka carries the same neem-jaggery teaching.

Cheti Chand — the Sindhi new year

For the Sindhi community the same Pratipada (by their reckoning, the day the Chaitra moon is first seen) is Cheti Chand — the new year and the birth festival of Jhulelal, the water-born saint who is the community's ishta. Processions carry the bahrana sahib to water; the day carries the community's memory of deliverance across the Sindhu. One tithi, a third tradition — the page's running lesson.

The year's first chart

The panchanga-shravanam custom IS jyotish as festival: the samvatsara's character is read from this day's chart — its weekday assigns the year-lord (varsheshvara), and the almanac's public forecast flows from that reading.
