What Maha Shivratri is

Every lunar month has a Shivratri — the Krishna Chaturdashi night — but the one before Phalguna's amavasya is the Maha: the great one. Its logic is the tithi's position, not a story alone: the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight is the moon at its thinnest, the mind's graha almost gone, and the tradition chose exactly that night to sit with the still one — Mahadev, the meditator on Kailash. Where most festivals celebrate light at its fullest, Shivratri goes the other way: into the dark, awake.

Three stories share the night. It is kept as the night of Shiva and Parvati's wedding — which is why unmarried women fast for a worthy husband and married homes for the marriage itself. It is the night of the halahala: when the ocean's churning threw up poison before nectar, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat — the Neelkanth whose vigil devotees echo by staying awake. And it is the night the linga is honoured as the column of light without beginning or end. Vivah, visha, jyoti — love, poison, light — one night carries all three.

The vrat — what is kept and how

• The fast runs from the morning through the night vigil, broken (parana) the next morning after the Chaturdashi ends. Full nirjala for the strict; phalahar — fruit, milk, sabudana, singhara — for most homes; the unwell and elderly keep symbol, not suffering.
• No grains or pulses through the vrat day; the kitchen cooks the vrat foods that the night's four prahars will punctuate.
• The vigil is the vrat's other half: the night is spent at the temple or the home shrine — abhishek, katha, om namah shivaya, bhajan — deliberately awake. Shivratri slept through is a fast, not the vrat.
• The classic prayer-pairs: the unmarried for a right match, couples for the marriage's strength, seekers for steadiness of mind — each is a Shivratri tradition in its own right.

The four-prahar abhishek, step by step

   Know your prahars

   The night divides into four prahars — watch-length quarters from sunset to sunrise, city-specific — and the strict vrat performs one abhishek in each. The live panchang computes your city's night windows; most homes keep one thorough evening abhishek and the jaagran.

   The dravyas, in order

   Classically the panchamrit sequence: water, milk, curd, honey, ghee — each poured, each followed by water — then sandal, and the linga dressed fresh. Sugarcane juice and coconut water join in many traditions.

3. 3

   The bel and the rest

   Bel leaves — trifoliate, unbroken, laid smooth side down — with dhatura, aak and bhasma where tradition keeps them: the offerings every other deity's puja omits, accepted by the one who accepts what no one else will.

4. 4

   The mantra and the night

   Om namah shivaya through the abhishek; the Mahamrityunjaya for those praying for health; the Shiva Chalisa or Rudrashtakam in the jaagran. Between prahars, the katha of the night's three stories.

Temple queues at the twelve jyotirlingas and the great Shiva temples run through the night — Ujjain's Mahakal, Kashi Vishwanath, Somnath. If you join one, the queue itself is the jaagran.

Across the regions

• Kashi and Ujjain: the night the city does not sleep; Mahakal's bhasma-aarti season peaks, and baraat processions of Shiva — the ganas in costume — walk the old lanes.
• Kashmir: Herath — the valley's greatest festival, kept by Kashmiri Pandit homes with the watak puja the night before amavasya; walnuts soaked and shared as prasad.
• The south: Shivaratri jaagarane — night-long Rudrabhisheka and Lingashtaka in Karnataka and Andhra; in Tamil tradition the night of the four jaamams, each with its own puja.
• Nepal: Pashupatinath draws lakhs of sadhus and pilgrims — the subcontinent's largest Shivratri gathering outside India.

The twelve jyotirlingas — the night's map

The night's own katha — Shiva as the endless column of light — has a geography: the twelve jyotirlingas, from Somnath on Gujarat's shore to Rameshwaram at the sea's other end, Kedarnath in the snow to Grishneshwar by Ellora, with Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain, Kashi Vishwanath, Tryambakeshwar, Omkareshwar, Bhimashankar, Baidyanath, Nageshwar and Mallikarjuna between. On Maha Shivratri each is the centre of its own world, and the barah-jyotirlinga path recited at tonight's jaagran is held to carry the darshan of all twelve. Most families' Shivratri temple is simply the neighbourhood Shivalaya — which the tradition insists is no smaller: the linga at the corner shrine and the linga at Kashi name the same column.

Why Saturn and the Moon are sent to Shiva

The remedy chapters route two grahas to Shiva above all. The Moon, because he wears it — Chandrashekhar, the crescent in the matted hair: the mind's graha resting on the head of the stillest one, which is the tradition's whole image for an afflicted mind finding shelter. And Saturn, because Shivratri's vigil is Saturn's own discipline — austerity, patience, the long dark watched without flinching; Shani's classical remedies (restraint, service, the honouring of effort) are Shaiva in temperament. Sade sati and dhaiya years, a weak or eclipsed Moon, the Mahamrityunjaya prayed through an illness — the shastra's address for all of them is tonight's deity.
