Yogini dasha is a classical timing system that divides life into a repeating 36-year cycle of eight periods (yoginis), each ruled by a planet: Mangala (Moon, 1 year), Pingala (Sun, 2), Dhanya (Jupiter, 3), Bhramari (Mars, 4), Bhadrika (Mercury, 5), Ulka (Saturn, 6), Siddha (Venus, 7) and Sankata (Rahu, 8). It is widely used in North-Indian practice alongside Vimshottari dasha.

From your janma nakshatra — the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth. The count follows the uncontested classical formula ((nakshatra number + 3) divided by 8, the remainder naming the yogini), and your opening period is shortened by the portion of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed at birth.

Vimshottari runs a 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods; Yogini runs a compact 36-year cycle of eight. Many astrologers read them side by side: when both point to the same planet or theme at the same time, the timing signal is considered stronger.
