The spring Navratri

The tradition keeps four Navratris a year — two public, two gupt — and the Chaitra one opens the lunar year itself. Where the autumn (Sharadiya) Navratri builds toward Dussehra and the slaying of Mahishasura, the spring one builds toward a birth: Rama's, on the ninth day. The mood differs accordingly — the autumn festival is the Devi's victory; the spring one is the Devi as the year's mother, worshipped so that the new samvat begins under her hand. North India, and especially the Devi's great shaktipeeths from Vaishno Devi to Vindhyachal, fill for all nine days.

Ghatasthapana — planting the year

The festival opens by planting it: a clay vessel of earth is sown with jau (barley), the kalash is installed over it with mango leaves and coconut, and the akhand jyoti is lit where the family keeps one. The barley grows through the nine days — its height and colour read as the year's omen — and the kalash holds the Devi's invited presence. Ghatasthapana is done in the day's prescribed window avoiding certain periods; the timings are city-specific, so take them from the live panchang rather than any printed list.

The nine forms, the nine days

The vrat, and the kanya pujan

• Nine days of sattvik phalahar for those who fast — fruit, milk, kuttu, singhara, sabudana; no grains, onion or garlic in observing homes. Full nine-day fasts, first-and-last-day fasts, and single-day vrats are all established forms.
• The Durga Saptashati path over the nine days is the festival's classical text-practice; homes that cannot read the whole keep the Devi Kavach and the Chalisa.
• Ashtami/Navami close with kanya pujan — nine girls fed and honoured as the Devi's forms, with halwa-puri-chana. The rite's own logic: the goddess worshipped nine nights is then served in living form.
• New beginnings sit naturally in these nine days — the year's first purchases, launches and griha pravesh cluster here; the spring wedding stretch also runs through this window.

Spring vs autumn Navratri

Same Devi, different doors. The autumn Navratri is the public festival — pandals, garba, Dussehra at its end; the spring one is quieter and more domestic, its energy flowing into the new year's sankalps and Rama's birth. Ayurveda reads both as ritu-sandhi — season joints — where the fast itself is the medicine: nine light days while the body crosses from one season to the next. Families who keep only one usually keep the autumn; the tradition's old houses keep both.
