In 185 daysVasant Panchami
Saraswati Puja — spring's yellow, learning's day.
Vasant Panchami 2027 falls on Thursday 11 February, on Magha Shukla Panchami — the day spring is declared and Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech and the arts, is worshipped. Homes and schools dress in yellow, books, pens and instruments rest at the goddess's feet for the day, and children write their first letters in the vidyarambh rite. In Bengal it is Saraswati Pujo, the students' own festival; across the north it is also held an abujh muhurat — a day auspicious for weddings without asking a panchang. This guide covers the Saraswati puja vidhi, vidyarambh, why yellow, the regional forms, the wedding-day tradition, and the jyotish of learning — the houses and grahas a student's kundli actually runs on.

How Kundli.me helps
Vidyarambh day — ask the guru about the education houses in your child's kundli, or use the abujh muhurat for February's wedding dates.
February's vivah datesWhat Vasant Panchami is
Forty days before Holi, on the fifth of Magha's bright fortnight, the tradition declares spring — not by temperature but by intent. The mustard is gold in the fields, the koel finds its voice, and the season of Kamadeva's return is opened with a puja not to pleasure but to Saraswati: the white-clad goddess on the swan, veena in hand, who presides over everything the mind makes. The pairing is deliberate. Spring is desire's season; the tradition begins it by bowing to discipline — as if to say, let the year's first new energy go to learning.
Saraswati puja at home, step by step
- 1
The morning
Bathe, wear yellow if you can, and set the goddess's image on a clean chowki with white and yellow flowers — palash where the region has it, genda everywhere else.
- 2
The books
Place the household's instruments of learning at her feet — schoolbooks, pens, the harmonium or tabla, the laptop in many homes now — and let them rest there for the day. Study pauses; the tools are being blessed.
- 3
The offering
Yellow foods carry the day — kesar halwa, boondi, khichdi in the east, meethe chawal in the north. The Saraswati Vandana (ya kundendu…) is sung; students recite it at school assemblies across the country.
- 4
Vidyarambh
The day's heart: a child who has not yet begun letters writes the first ones today — guided by an elder's hand, on rice, a slate or paper — and the family's newest student is formally welcomed to learning. Akshar-abhyas in Bengal, vidyarambh in the north and south alike.
In Bengali tradition students do not touch their books at all this day — the books are with the goddess; study resumes tomorrow, blessed.
Why everything turns yellow
The honest first answer is the fields: by Magha the mustard crop has turned north India gold, and the festival wears its season. The tradition layers meaning on top — basanti yellow as the colour of ripening intellect, of energy without rawness, the shade between the white of Saraswati and the saffron of renunciation. Kites fill the sky in Punjab and the Doab on this day for the same reason the clothes turn yellow: spring is announced by doing, not by dates.
The abujh muhurat — weddings without asking
Across much of North India, Vasant Panchami is one of the calendar's few swayam-siddha days: auspicious in itself, so that weddings, griha pravesh and new ventures proceed without consulting a panchang. Marriage halls fill accordingly — in many towns this is among the year's biggest wedding days. The tradition's fine print still applies: abujh removes the need to ask whether the DAY is good; it says nothing about whether the day suits a particular couple. The panchang layer is free for everyone today — the couple's own layer (tara bala, chandra bala, dashas) still repays checking, and February's full engine table shows how the day sits among its neighbours.
The jyotish of learning — a student's chart
What Saraswati governs in the temple, the kundli maps in houses and grahas. Education sits across the fourth house (schooling, the learning environment), the fifth (intelligence, memory, purva-punya) and — for higher and specialised study — the ninth; Mercury is the karaka of buddhi, grasp and speech, Jupiter of gyan, depth and the teacher. A student's question — why marks slip, when focus returns, which stream fits — is read from the condition of these houses and their lords, the Mercury-Jupiter relationship, and the dasha actually running through the exam years. As always, no single placement decides: the guru weighs every sourced factor for the education houses before it answers.
The day's practical rite for a family: cast the new student's kundli alongside their vidyarambh — many households make the child's first chart and first letters the same day's pair — and keep it for the questions the school years will bring.
Across the regions
- Bengal, Odisha, Assam — Saraswati Pujo: pandals in schools and para clubs, anjali offered by students in yellow, khichuri bhog, and the books untouched all day. For students it outranks nearly every other festival.
- Punjab and the Doab — Basant: the kite sky, yellow at the gurdwara langars, and the Basant raag sung from Patiala to Kasur — a festival older than the border that crosses it.
- Braj — the Holi season formally opens: gulal is offered to the deities today, and Vrindavan's forty days of Holi begin.
- The south — Saraswati's great worship sits in Sharad Navratri (Ayudha Puja), but vidyarambh on this Panchami is widely kept, and temples honour the day.
Frequently asked questions
When is Vasant Panchami in 2027?
Thursday 11 February 2027, on Magha Shukla Panchami. Check your city's tithi window on the live panchang — the Panchami's span decides the puja day where it straddles two dates.
Can we really marry on Vasant Panchami without a muhurat?
That is what the abujh tradition holds, across much of the north — the day itself is taken as auspicious. Checking the date against both kundlis still serves the couple; abujh answers the day's question, not the match's. February's engine table shows the day's actual panchang too.
What is vidyarambh and what age is right?
The formal first-letters rite — an elder guides the child's hand through the first aksharas, classically on rice. Families time it anywhere from two to five years; the readiness that matters is the child's interest, and this day is its classic occasion.
Which houses rule education in a kundli?
The fourth (schooling), fifth (intelligence, memory) and ninth (higher learning), with Mercury and Jupiter as the karakas. Their combined state — houses, lords, aspects, and the running dasha — is the honest answer to any education question; no single placement decides.
Why does Bengal keep books untouched this day?
Because the books are at the goddess's feet, receiving the blessing — study pauses so that learning may resume consecrated. It is the one holiday the tradition grants FROM study, in study's own honour.
Is Vasant Panchami the start of Holi?
In Braj, formally yes — gulal touches the deities today and the forty-day Holi season opens, running to Phalguna Purnima. Elsewhere the connection is looser, but the count to Holi begins with spring's declaration.
What should a student actually do this day?
Rest the books with the goddess, sing the vandana, wear yellow, eat the kesar halwa — and if the year has a big exam, look at the chart honestly: the dasha and the education houses say what kind of effort the year rewards. Ask the guru; it weighs all of it before answering.
