In 126 daysVivah Panchami
The wedding day of Rama and Sita.
Vivah Panchami 2026 falls on Monday 14 December, on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami — the day the tradition marks the wedding of Rama and Sita. In Janakpur in Nepal, where Sita lifted the bow's shadow long before Rama strung it, the whole city becomes a barat for a week; in Ayodhya and in Ram temples everywhere the vivah is re-enacted with full wedding rites. The day lands in the heart of the winter wedding season, and this guide covers the story as the Ramayana tells it, the re-enactment vidhi at temple and home, why Mithila's own families avoid marrying on this exact day, and what the season's computed muhurat calendar says for the weeks around it.

How Kundli.me helps
The season's most storied wedding day — see December's computed shubh vivah dates, or match your kundlis the way tradition matched theirs.
December's vivah datesThe bow, the court, and the wedding
King Janak of Mithila had vowed that Sita — found in a furrow, raised as the earth's own daughter — would marry the man who could string the great bow of Shiva that rested in his court. Kings tried and failed to move it. Rama, in Janak's court with Vishvamitra, lifted it, strung it, and broke it — the crack, the Ramcharitmanas says, silencing three worlds. The wedding that followed was fourfold: Rama to Sita, and his three brothers to Urmila, Mandavi and Shrutakirti — Ayodhya's four princes wed to Mithila's four daughters, on this Panchami.
The scene the tradition returns to most is not the bow but the phulwari — Tulsidas's garden meeting, where Rama and Sita see each other first among the flowers, before any court or contest. The vivah of Vivah Panchami is remembered as a meeting of equals: Janak's daughter chose with her eyes what the bow later confirmed.
Janakpur and Ayodhya — the living wedding
In Janakpur — Janak's own capital, in Nepal's Mithila — Vivah Panchami is the year's centre: a week of processions culminating in a barat from the Ram Mandir to the Janaki Mandir, where the vivah is performed with full Maithil rites before lakhs of pilgrims. Ayodhya answers from the groom's side — temples take out Ram baraats, and the twin cities re-enact between them the oldest wedding either remembers. Temples across India and the diaspora hold their own jhanki-vivah the same evening: the murtis dressed as var and vadhu, the mandap raised, the pheras walked.
Keeping it at home, step by step
- 1
The sankalp
Bathe, and take the day's sankalp before Rama and Sita's image — for a happy married life, or for a right match for one seeking marriage; both are this day's classic prayers.
- 2
The small vivah
Dress the images as bride and groom — new cloth, a garland each — and perform a simple vivah: the gathbandhan knot between their vastras, akshat, and the aarti. Many homes read the Ramcharitmanas's Vivah Prasang (Bal Kand) through the evening.
- 3
The bhog
Offer kheer and the winter's seasonal foods; in Maithil homes the wedding foods of the region. Prasad goes first to the unmarried members of the house — the day's blessing is aimed at them.
- 4
For those seeking marriage
The tradition holds this day especially answerable for vivah-badha — obstructed marriages. The prayer is to the couple whose own wedding overcame a broken bow's worth of impossibility; alongside it, have the kundli's seventh house actually read, so effort follows the prayer.
Why Mithila itself does not marry on this day
A truth this page owes its readers: in Mithila — and among Maithil families on both sides of the border — weddings are traditionally NOT solemnised on Vivah Panchami itself. The reasoning is remembered plainly: Sita's married life, for all its devotion, passed through exile, separation and trial, and Maithil parents do not give a daughter away on the day that life began. The day belongs to the divine couple; human weddings take the season's other dates. Not every community keeps this — much of North India marries happily through this week — but if your family is Maithil, this is why your elders hesitate.
Follow your family's tradition. Where the day is avoided, the weeks around it are fully open — the computed calendar below shows exactly which days.
Mid-season: the December calendar around it
Vivah Panchami sits three weeks after Dev Uthani opened the season and days before kharmas closes December's first half. The real-world effect: the fortnight around this day is the winter season's densest wedding stretch, and its dates book out first. Our engine computes December's full day-by-day table — every date scored with its nakshatra and tithi — on the December vivah-muhurat page; the umbrella page holds the whole season.
The jyotish of the match — what the story models
The tradition's own telling carries a jyotish lesson. Rama and Sita are the archetype the kundli-milan tables were built toward — and the archetype is also honest: a maximal match on paper still lived through fourteen years of exile. The shastra's answer is not to trust one number but to weigh the whole: the ashtakoot score AND the mangal-dosha state AND the seventh houses AND the dashas both charts are running. That is exactly how the guru answers a marriage question — every sourced factor, strongest for and against, then the net. Run the milan free; take the consultation when the answer needs judgement.
Frequently asked questions
When is Vivah Panchami in 2026?
Monday 14 December 2026, on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami. Check your own city's tithi on the live panchang — a Panchami can shift a day between regions.
Is Vivah Panchami a good day for MY wedding?
By panchang the day is auspicious, and much of North India marries through this week. Maithil tradition avoids the exact day (see the section above). Either way, score the specific date against both kundlis — the free tool computes it, and December's engine table shows the alternatives.
What is special to do for someone whose marriage is delayed?
The day's classic vrat and the Vivah Prasang path are kept exactly for vivah-badha. Pair the prayer with the analysis: the seventh house, its lord, Venus/Jupiter and the running dasha say where the delay sits — ask the guru, which weighs all of them before answering.
What is read on Vivah Panchami?
The Vivah Prasang of the Ramcharitmanas's Bal Kand — from the phulwari to the pheras. Families read it through the evening; temples run it as a musical path.
Why is Janakpur the centre of this festival?
Because it is Sita's home — Janak's capital, where the bow was kept, where the Janaki Mandir stands today. On this day Janakpur is the bride's house on the wedding morning, and the whole Mithila region its baraat ground.
Which are December 2026's shubh wedding dates?
They are computed live by our panchang engine — every day of the month scored with nakshatra, tithi and verdict — on the December vivah-muhurat page, with the kharmas cut-off explained. These are general muhurats; for your own kundli-based date, take a consultation.
Rama and Sita matched perfectly — why did they still suffer?
The tradition's own honest answer: a match describes the bond, not the road. Their bond held through every trial — which is what the milan measures. Jyotish reads compatibility AND timing (dashas, transits) as separate questions; a strong match with a hard period ahead is told to prepare, not to part.
