Why Kartik is the holiest month

The Puranas rank Kartik above every other month for snan, daan and deep-daan — bathing, giving, and the offering of lamps. Through the month, devotees bathe before sunrise in a river or with river-water at home, light a lamp for Vishnu each evening — Damodar, in this month's name for him — and keep tulsi close; the month that began its brightest half at Dev Uthani now completes on this purnima. Whatever is given or lit in Kartik, the tradition holds, returns multiplied; the purnima is the month's summit, when the whole month's observance bears fruit.

Dev Deepawali — the gods' Diwali

Fifteen days after Diwali, the lamps return — but this night they are lit for the gods, not by them. The katha is Shiva's: the three flying cities of Tripurasura, unassailable until they aligned, destroyed by a single arrow when they did — pride's architecture undone in a moment. The devas, freed, descended to Kashi and lit the ghats in celebration; Dev Deepawali keeps that night. In Varanasi every ghat step holds a diya and the river carries thousands more; but the rite scales down to any home: lamps at the door and the tulsi, and one set afloat on any water with a prayer.

The snan and the deep-daan, step by step

   The bath

   Before sunrise if possible, in a river, sarovar or at home with a little Ganga-jal in the water — the completion of the month's Kartik snan, or a single purnima snan for those joining only today.

   The vrat and puja

   Many keep the purnima vrat and worship Vishnu and Lakshmi, with Satyanarayan katha in countless homes this evening — the purnima is its classic day.

   The lamps

   At dusk, lamps at the door, the tulsi, the puja sthal — and the deep-daan itself: a diya on a leaf or flour boat, set on moving or still water, given away with the wish it carries.

   The daan

   The month's multiplier applies most to giving: anna-daan first, and — with winter beginning — warm clothes and blankets. Whatever leaves the house today should feed or warm someone.

Guru Nanak Jayanti — the same full moon

This purnima is Guru Nanak's prakash parv, the Sikh tradition's greatest festival. Gurdwaras complete the akhand path, nagar kirtans move through the streets behind the Panj Pyare, and the langar feeds everyone who comes — the tradition's own form of the day's anna-daan. For crores of families the day belongs wholly to the Guru; for every reader it is a reminder that this full moon gathers more than one tradition to the same light.

The full Moon of the holiest month — in your chart

On a Kartik Purnima the Moon typically stands in or near its exaltation territory — Krittika or Rohini's neighbourhood, the Taurus side of the sky where the Moon is strongest — opposite a Sun in its debilitation sign of Libra's stretch. Jyotish reads the pair simply: the mind's graha at full paksha-bala on the year's most merit-laden day. It is a natural day to look at your own Moon — its rashi, nakshatra and house decide how you feel before you think — and a good day for the daan the shastras attach to a weak Moon anyway: white things, milk, rice, given where they nourish.

Pushkar — the mela's holiest dip

Kartik Purnima is the crescendo of the Pushkar Mela. For the days leading to the full moon, Pushkar's dunes fill with one of the world's great camel and livestock fairs — and on the purnima itself the fair turns pilgrim: lakhs bathe in Pushkar's lake, whose fifty-two ghats surround the water the Padma Purana calls born of Brahma's lotus, beside the rare temple where Brahma himself is worshipped. Tradition holds that a snan here on this one purnima carries the merit of pilgrimages many times its size; the cattle fair, the folk races and the ferris wheels are the worldly wrapping of what is, at its core, a full-moon snan festival.

Boita Bandana — Odisha sails a remembered sea

On this same dawn, Odisha keeps Boita Bandana: families float little boats — of banana stem, cork and paper, carrying a lamp, betel and rice — chanting "aa ka ma boi", remembering the sadhabas, the merchant sailors who once caught this full moon's winds to sail for Bali, Java and Sumatra. Cuttack's Bali Jatra — "the voyage to Bali" — opens on this day on the Mahanadi's bank and runs as one of Asia's largest open fairs. It is the same purnima wearing a seafaring memory: lamps on water, here remembering the ships.
