What Lohri is

Lohri is the north-west's winter-solstice festival grown into a harvest night: the coldest stretch of Paush ends, the sugarcane crush is in, and the community answers the long nights with its biggest fire. Everything about the night is communal — the wood gathered door to door by children singing for their lohri (the til-gur and coins they collect), the fire raised on the shared chowk, the parikrama walked by every family together, and the dhol that turns the crowd into one dance. It is Punjab's night above all, but Haryana, Himachal, Jammu and Delhi keep it as their own, and Sindhi tradition holds the same night as Lal Loi.

Dulla Bhatti — the ballad in the songs

Every Lohri song circles one name. Abdullah Khan "Dulla" Bhatti, a Rajput-Muslim rebel of Akbar's Punjab, robbed the imperial caravans and spent the takings on the poor — and, the ballad says, when girls of poor homes were seized to be sold, he freed them, arranged their weddings in the forest, gave shagun of gur from his own hand, and performed their kanyadaan himself. "Sundar mundriye — ho!" the children sing at every door: the beautiful girl, Dulla's daughter now, married with a ser of sugar. A Muslim outlaw honoured every winter by Hindu and Sikh homes as the father of Punjab's daughters — Lohri's own lesson in what the fire burns away.

The bonfire night, step by step

   Gather

   Through the day, children go door to door singing the Lohri songs and collecting til, gur, gajak and coins — refusing them is refusing the festival; the collected lohri feeds the night's prasad.

   Light

   After sunset the community fire is raised at the chowk or courtyard. The first offering goes in with the elders — til and gur to the flames, with the call aadar aaye dilather jaaye: may honour come, may poverty leave.

   Parikrama

   Families circle the fire — commonly seven rounds — offering til, moongphali and popcorn each round, praying for the year's abundance; new brides and newborns are carried around it first.

   Sing and dance

   The dhol takes over — bhangra and gidda around the flames till the fire settles. The night's food is the season's: sarson ka saag, makki di roti, and the til-gur that names the month.

   Share

   The prasad — til, gur, gajak, rewri, moongphali — is distributed to every house around the fire; what the children collected returns to everyone. Lohri hoards nothing.

The first Lohri — bride and newborn

A household's first Lohri after a wedding or a birth is the festival at full strength. The new bride sits by the fire in her wedding finery and is given shagun by every elder; the newborn — traditionally a son, in living practice every child — is carried around the flames, and the family distributes the child's first Lohri of gur and rewri through the neighbourhood. The night formally seats the newest member in the community's circle: the fire that the whole mohalla shares now knows them.

The first-Lohri custom has a gentle modern correction worth naming: for decades "pehli Lohri" meant a boy's. Punjab's own campaigns — and countless families — now light it identically for daughters, dhol and all. The ballad at the festival's heart is, after all, about a man who fought for daughters.

The night before Uttarayan — the jyotish frame

Lohri's date is solar, which is why it barely moves: it is the last night of the Sun's Dhanu month, with Makar Sankranti — the Capricorn entry that begins Uttarayan's six celebrated months — at dawn behind it. In jyotish terms the fire burns on the closing night of kharmas, and the wedding-muhurat calendar that kharmas held shut reopens with the Sankranti; January's engine-computed dates begin right after this night. The classical til-daan of the season also starts here: til to the fire tonight, til in the daan tomorrow — the Sun and Saturn's shared remedy, father and son reconciled at Makara.
