The birth of the wind's son

Anjana, an apsara born as a vanara by a rishi's word, worshipped Shiva for a son; Vayu, the wind, carried to her the blessed payasam of Dasharatha's putreshti yajna — the same offering that gave Ayodhya its four princes. So Hanuman is twice-connected at birth: Shiva's amsha by blessing, Rama's kin by the shared offering, and the wind's son by carriage. Born at sunrise on the Chaitra Purnima at Anjaneri, the infant leapt for the rising sun taking it for a fruit — the first of the strength-stories, and the one that ended with Indra's vajra, the jaw (hanu) that names him, and the devas' compounding boons.

The day, step by step

   Before sunrise

   Temples open dark and early — the janma aarti is sung as the sun rises, the tradition's own birth moment. Home worship follows the same order after the bath.

2. 2

   Sindoor and chola

   The deity receives the chola — sindoor in jasmine oil — recalling the katha of Hanuman covering his body in sindoor for Rama's long life; devotees take a touch of it as tilak.

3. 3

   The paths

   The Chalisa — once, eleven times, or a hundred-and-eight by vow — and the Sundarkand, his own kand of the Manas, sung solo or in the sabha style. Bajrang Baan where the family keeps it.

4. 4

   Prasad and daan

   Boondi or besan laddoos, tulsi-dal in every offering; the day's daan goes quietly to those who serve with their body — the tradition reads Hanuman's seva in them.

Why Mangal and Shani go to Hanuman

Two remedy-lines meet at his temple. Tuesday — Mangal's day — is Hanuman's day: the graha of strength, courage and conflict answered by the tradition's embodiment of strength governed by devotion; manglik-dosha remedies classically include his worship. And Saturday belongs to him through the Shani katha: Hanuman freed Shani from Ravana's captivity, and the boon that followed — Shani troubles none who take Hanuman's name — is why sade-sati remedies run through the Chalisa. The Chalisa as a practice

Tulsidas's forty verses are the tradition's most-recited text for a reason the Jayanti makes visible: they are a complete Hanuman theology in pocket form — strength, service, learning, the crossing of the impossible — closed by the protection couplet. The Jayanti's vowed recitations (eleven, twenty-one, a hundred-and-eight) are the day's tapas; a single attentive Chalisa is its everyday form.
