Why the monsoon honours serpents

The timing is the farmer's: Shravan's rains flood the burrows, and the serpents rise into fields and courtyards exactly when the paddy work begins. The tradition answered fear with a treaty — one day of honour, milk at the anthill, no digging that might break a burrow — and built its theology over it: Shesha holds Vishnu and the worlds; Vasuki served as the churning rope of the ocean; the nagas guard treasure and water in the earth. Nag Panchami is the old agreement renewed: the field shared between the plough and what lives beneath it.

The day's vidhi

   The image

   Naga images — clay, silver, or the doorway painting in geru and haldi — are bathed with milk and water, offered durva, flowers, akshat and haldi-kumkum.

   The milk

   Milk is offered TO the image or at the anthill's edge — the tradition's own naturalists note that live snakes do not drink milk; the offering is to the deity, and the kind form is milk at the image, food to the snake-charmer's family, and the burrow left in peace.

   The restraints

   No digging or ploughing today, and in many homes no cutting with iron on the fire — the tava rests; the day's food is steamed or boiled where the custom is strict.

   The katha

   The Kaliya-daman is the day's telling: Krishna dancing the poison out of the Yamuna's serpent and then sparing him — mastery over venom ending in protection, not extermination; the farmer-brother katha of the north carries the same treaty in village form.

Kaal Sarp and Rahu-Ketu — check first, then remedy

The remedy tradition names this day for the serpent grahas: Kaal Sarp dosha — all seven classical grahas hemmed between Rahu and Ketu — and Rahu-Ketu afflictions generally, with the Nag Panchami puja (grandest at Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain) as their classical occasion. The site's standing honesty applies doubled here, because this dosha is the market's favourite fear: a large share of people told they have Kaal Sarp do not, and the hemming has degrees and cancellations the fear-sellers skip. So the order is fixed: run the free Kaal Sarp check — it computes the actual axis from your chart — and let the guru weigh every factor (the nodes' houses, their dispositors, the running dasha) before any remedy is named. If the dosha is real, this day's puja, the Rahu-Ketu disciplines and the serpent-daan are the tradition's answer; if it is not, the day is still the nagas' — honour them and keep your money.

The eight great nagas

The day's puja classically names eight: Ananta (Shesha), Vasuki, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshaka, Kulira, Karkata and Shankha — the ashta-naga invoked together in the Panchami mantra. Each carries a story-post in the tradition: Shesha the bearer of worlds and Vishnu's couch, Vasuki Shiva's own ornament and the churning rope, Takshaka the king whose feud frames the Mahabharata's outermost tale — Janamejaya's serpent sacrifice, halted by the boy-sage Astika on, the texts say, this very Panchami. That halted yajna is the day's charter myth: the festival exists because an extermination was stopped.

Shravan's first great day

Nag Panchami opens Shravan's festival ladder: the month's Mondays belong to Shiva — whose own throat wears the serpent — and the Panchami leads on to Raksha Bandhan at the Purnima, then the Bhadrapada festivals beyond. Deep in Chaturmas, it is a vrat-season day through and through: the paddy stands in water, the calendars hold no weddings, and the month's work is worship.
