In 342 daysGuru Purnima
The full moon of the teacher — Vyasa's day.
Guru Purnima 2027 falls on Sunday 18 July — the Ashadha full moon, kept as Vyasa Purnima for the sage who arranged the Vedas, composed the Mahabharata and seeded the Puranas. It is the tradition's teacher's day in the deepest sense: disciples honour their gurus — diksha gurus, shiksha gurus, the parents who were the first of both — with pada-puja, guru-dakshina and renewed vows; ashrams and sampradayas hold their largest darbars; and the Buddhist world keeps the same moon as the day of the first sermon at Sarnath. Falling days into Chaturmas, it opens the season's study half. This guide covers the day's meaning and vidhi, Vyasa's place in it, how a householder honours a guru without an ashram, and the jyotish of Jupiter — the graha the tradition names Guru.

How Kundli.me helps
Jupiter — Guru — is the karaka of wisdom in your kundli. See your Guru's strength free, and ask the Jyotish Guru what it means.
Your Jupiter, in your kundliWhy the day belongs to Vyasa
The tradition dates this Purnima as Vyasa's birth — and made him the measure of all teaching. Krishna Dvaipayana earned the title Veda Vyasa by arranging the one Veda into four; he composed the Mahabharata with the Gita inside it, framed the Brahma Sutras, seeded the Puranas through his disciples. Every vyasa-peeth — the teacher's seat in any katha or ashram — is named for him, and the day's guru-puja begins by honouring him at the head of every lineage. To honour one's own guru on Vyasa's day is to honour the whole river at once.
The day, step by step
- 1
Morning
Bath, the Purnima vrat's sankalp for those who keep it, and Vishnu-Vyasa worship at home — the guru-parampara invoked from Vyasa down to one's own teachers.
- 2
The guru's darbar
Where the guru is living and present: pada-puja, the offering of dakshina by capacity, and the renewal of the diksha vows. Ashrams hold their year's largest satsangs today.
- 3
Where the guru is not present
The paduka or image receives the puja; a letter, a call, a gift of seva to the guru's work carries the dakshina. Teachers of every kind — school, music, craft — are honoured in the same spirit.
- 4
The reading
The Guru Gita (from the Skanda Purana) and the Vyasa-vandana are the day's texts; many begin a Chaturmas parayana — the Bhagavata, the Manas — from today.
The same moon at Sarnath
The Buddhist world keeps this Ashadha full moon as the day the Buddha, weeks after his awakening, taught the first sermon — the Dhammacakkappavattana — to the five ascetics at Sarnath's deer park, setting the wheel of dharma turning. Asalha Puja in Thailand and Sri Lanka, and the opening of the monastic rains-retreat (vassa) — the Buddhist chaturmas — follow this moon. Two traditions, one teaching moon: the day the teacher speaks and the season of staying put begins.
A householder's Guru Purnima
The day does not require an ashram. The tradition's own list of gurus begins at home — mata, pita, and the first teachers of one's letters and trade — and its widest form honours whoever carried you a step toward light: the schoolteacher found and thanked, the ustad's fees paid forward as a scholarship, the mentor written to plainly. Where no living guru stands, the tradition points to the granth as guru — the Gita or the Manas honoured and then actually read — and to the inner resolve the Guru Gita calls the guru's true seat. Dakshina's household form is seva: teach one person something you know, today.
Jupiter — the graha named Guru
Jyotish gave the teacher's office a graha: Brihaspati, called simply Guru — karaka of wisdom, dharma, children, wealth's ethical face, and in a woman's chart the husband. His condition in a kundli is read as the native's access to guidance itself: a strong Guru finds teachers and is teachable; an afflicted one meets the counterfeit kinds. His metal is gold, his day Thursday, his classical disciplines — honouring teachers and elders, the Thursday practices, the study he rules — are precisely this festival's acts, which is why the day doubles as Jupiter's remedy day. Where YOUR Jupiter stands — house, sign, aspects, and whether his dasha runs — is one look away in the free kundli; what it means is the guru's kind of question, answered across every factor.
Early Chaturmas — the study half begins
Guru Purnima lands four days after Devshayani Ekadashi closed the wedding season — deliberately, the tradition would say: the doing season pauses and the learning season is inaugurated by honouring the teachers. The sadhu world begins its chaturmas vaas under a guru today; householders begin parayanas and niyams. The season's arc runs from here through Shravan's vrats to the autumn festivals, and the wedding calendar waits at Dev Uthani.
Frequently asked questions
When is Guru Purnima in 2027?
Sunday 18 July 2027 — the Ashadha Purnima, four days after Devshayani Ekadashi. Your city's tithi window is on the live panchang.
I have no diksha guru. Whom do I honour?
The tradition's list is generous: parents first, then every teacher of letters, craft or wisdom in your life — honoured directly, today. Where none stands near, the granth as guru: the Gita honoured and read is a full observance.
What is guru-dakshina today?
By capacity and by kind: the offering at the pada-puja, seva to the guru's work, fees paid forward as another's scholarship — and the dakshina every teacher names first, the vidya actually practised.
Is Guru Purnima a fasting day?
Many keep the Purnima vrat — phalahar until the evening worship — and many keep only the guru-puja. Both are established; the day's essence is the honouring, not the abstinence.
Why is Jupiter called Guru in astrology?
He is the devas' own preceptor in the tradition — and in the chart he carries the teacher's portfolio: wisdom, dharma, expansion, children, and guidance itself. His strength or affliction is read as one's relationship with guidance; his day and disciplines are this festival's.
What should I actually start today?
One study and one seva, held for the Chaturmas: a text read daily to its end, and one person taught something you know. That pair is the day's whole teaching in practice.
