What Mula Nakshatra is

Mula (मूल), sometimes written Moola, is the nineteenth nakshatra of the zodiac, occupying the opening 13°20′ of Sagittarius (Dhanu) — from 0°00′ to 13°20′. Its name literally means "root", and everything about it turns on that word: getting to the root, digging beneath the surface, and clearing away decayed foundations so something truer can grow. In the sky Mula marks the stinger and tail of the constellation Scorpius — the stars Shaula (λ Scorpii) and Lesath (υ Scorpii) — which, remarkably, point almost exactly toward the centre of our galaxy. Mula's presiding deity is Nirriti — the goddess of destruction, dissolution and decay, linked in tradition to Alakshmi, the dissolving counter-current to Lakshmi's abundance. She is not a comfortable deity, but she is a necessary one: her work is to break apart what has become false or exhausted so that renewal is possible. This is destruction as a precondition for creation — the compost from which new life grows.

Its symbol is a bunch of tied roots, and its animal (yoni) is the male dog — loyal, tenacious, and willing to dig. Its shakti (special power) is barhana shakti — the power to break, ruin and shatter.
