What Krittika Nakshatra is

Krittika (कृत्तिका) is the third nakshatra of the zodiac, and the first that straddles a sign boundary: it runs from 26°40′ of Aries to 10°00′ of Taurus. Its name comes from the root krit — "to cut" — so Krittika is "the one who cuts". In the night sky it is one of the most recognisable groups of all: the Pleiades, the small cluster often called the Six (or Seven) Sisters.

The core symbolism

Krittika's presiding deity is Agni, the god of fire — the sacred flame of the ritual that carries offerings to the gods, the fire of digestion in the body, and the priest who stands between the human and the divine. Its symbol is a razor or blade: sharp, precise, and able to cut cleanly. Its shakti is dahana shakti, "the power to burn" — to consume impurity and leave only what is pure and real.

There is a second thread in the myth. The Pleiades are the six Krittika mothers who nursed Kartikeya (Skanda / Murugan), the commander of the divine army. So alongside the razor's sharpness, Krittika carries a fierce, protective, nourishing quality — the warrior's foster-mothers.
