What Dhanishta Nakshatra is

Dhanishta (धनिष्ठा), also called Shravishtha, is the twenty-third nakshatra of the zodiac. Like its neighbours it straddles two signs: it begins at 23°20′ of Capricorn (Makar) and ends at 6°40′ of Aquarius (Kumbh). Its name means "the wealthiest" or "the most famous", and it is widely known as the "Star of Symphony" — everything about it turns on rhythm, abundance and renown. In the sky it is marked by the four stars of the constellation Delphinus, whose diamond shape tradition reads as a drum.

Dhanishta's presiding deities are the eight Vasus — Dhara (earth), Anala (fire), Anila (wind), Apas (water), Dhruva (the pole star), Soma (the moon), Prabhasa (dawn-light) and Pratyusha (light). They are the gods of the elements and of material abundance, attendants of Vishnu and Indra, and it is from them that Dhanishta draws its deep association with wealth, prosperity and worldly plenty.

Its symbol is a drum — a damaru or mridangam (sometimes shown as a flute) — the instrument of rhythm and of Shiva's cosmic dance.
