In 76 daysSharad Purnima
The night the moon rains amrit — kheer under moonlight.
Sharad Purnima 2026 falls on Sunday 25 October — the full-moon night of Ashwin, when the monsoon sky has cleared and the moon is held to shine with all sixteen kalas, showering amrit on the earth. It is the night kheer is set out in moonlight and eaten the next morning; the night Bengal keeps Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, staying awake for the goddess who asks "ko jagarti" — who is awake?; and in Braj, the night of Krishna's maha-raas. This guide covers the kheer custom and what stands behind it, the Kojagari vrat, the raas purnima, the ayurvedic view of the sharad moon, and what the Moon — mind, mother, emotions — means in your own kundli on its strongest night of the year.

How Kundli.me helps
The Moon is the mind in your kundli. See today's moonrise, nakshatra and purnima timings on the live panchang — and ask the guru what a strong or afflicted Moon means for you.
Tonight's moon on the panchangWhat Sharad Purnima is
Every month has a purnima; Sharad Purnima is the one the tradition singles out. It closes the month of Ashwin at the turn from monsoon to autumn — sharad ritu — when the air first turns clear and cool and the moon, no longer veiled by rain-clouds, looks nearest and brightest. The shastra's language for this is the sixteen kalas: the moon's phases counted as sixteenths, complete only on this night, when its light is held to carry amrit — the nectar of immortality — down to whatever stands open beneath the sky.
The kheer under the moon
The custom every household knows: rice kheer, cooked in milk, is set out in the open moonlight — on the terrace, the sill, the courtyard — covered with a thin cloth or a net, and eaten the next morning as prasad. The belief is that the amrit of the sixteen-kala moon settles into it overnight. Ayurveda gives the same custom its own reading: sharad is the season pitta flares, milk-and-rice is a cooling, pitta-pacifying food, and a night under the cool moon completes it — the tradition and the vaidya arrive at the same bowl.
Keep the kheer covered with a net or muslin — the custom asks for moonlight, not for the night's insects.
Kojagari — the night Lakshmi asks who is awake
In Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Mithila this purnima — not Diwali's amavasya — is the great night of Lakshmi. The name says why: ko jagarti, "who is awake?" — the question the goddess asks as she walks the night, blessing the households she finds awake and devoted. So families keep vigil: the alpana is drawn, her feet traced at the threshold, naivedya of flattened rice and coconut set out, and the night passed in katha and games rather than sleep.
Raas Purnima — the moon of Braj
The Bhagavata places Krishna's maha-raas on this same autumn full moon — the night he multiplied himself to dance with every gopi at once on the Yamuna's bank, and the moon, it is said, held still to watch. Vaishnava tradition reads the raas not as romance but as the soul's dance with the divine, each soul believing the beloved is hers alone. Temples across Braj, and Vaishnava homes everywhere, mark tonight with raas-lila, kirtan and jagran under the open moon.
The Moon in your kundli, on its fullest night
Jyotish gives tonight's hero the widest portfolio of any graha: the Moon is the mind (manas), the mother, emotions, memory, and the fastest-moving of the nine — which is why the rashi people quote for you is usually your chandra rashi, the sign the Moon held at your birth, and why the daily rashifal is read from it. A strong Moon — bright, well-placed, well-aspected — is read as emotional steadiness; an afflicted one as the restless mind the remedies chapters spend so many pages on.
A purnima is the Moon at maximum paksha-bala — full strength by phase. Tonight is a good night to actually look: open your kundli, find the Moon's sign, house and nakshatra, and see what the sky's brightest graha is doing in your own chart. The live panchang shows tonight's moon — its rashi, its nakshatra — for your city.
One moon, many festivals — across India
- Bengal — Kojagari Lokkhi Pujo: the year's principal household Lakshmi puja, with alpana, her traced feet, naru and moa sweets, and the deliberate vigil. Diwali night in Bengal belongs to Kali; Lakshmi's night is this one.
- Odisha — Kumar Purnima: unmarried girls keep the day for Kartikeya and the moon — the janhi osha with its dawn and moonrise offerings and the gamha-style games — one of Odisha's most loved observances.
- Gujarat — Sharad Poonam: garba under the open moon carries the Navratri energy into the full-moon night; doodh-poha — milk with flattened rice — is the night's dish.
- Maharashtra — Kojagiri: families gather on terraces for masala doodh boiled down under the moon; the first-born child is honoured in many homes this night.
- Braj and the Vaishnava world — Raas Purnima: raas-lila staged in Vrindavan's temples; Bankey Bihari's rare Mor Mukut darshan draws the year's longest lines.
If your Moon needs strengthening — the classical remedies
For an afflicted or weak Moon, the remedy chapters prescribe a consistent family of acts, and this night is their traditional occasion: daan of white things — milk, rice, white cloth, misri — given where they nourish; water to the moon; the Chandra mantra or Shiva worship (the Moon rests in Shiva's hair); care of one's mother and elder women, since the Moon's significations begin with the mother. Pearls and silver belong to this family too, but the shastra's order is telling — conduct and daan first, gemstones last, and a stone only ever on a qualified reading of the chart, never off a webpage.
Whether your Moon needs any of this is a chart question. The free kundli shows the Moon's sign, house, nakshatra and aspects in one look; the guru weighs the full set of sourced factors before calling a Moon weak at all.
Keeping the night — a simple order
- Evening: bathe, light a lamp to Lakshmi and the moon; in Kojagari homes, draw the alpana and Lakshmi's feet at the door.
- Set the kheer in open moonlight, covered with muslin or a net, where moonlight actually falls — a terrace beats a shaded balcony.
- Sit in the moonlight a while — the tradition of moon-bathing on this night is its gentlest rite; the katha, kirtan or simply the family together.
- Morning: the kheer is prasad — share it, beginning with elders.
- Check tonight's moonrise, rashi and nakshatra for your own city on the live panchang before you plan the evening.
Frequently asked questions
When is Sharad Purnima in 2026?
The full-moon night falls on Sunday 25 October 2026. The purnima tithi spans parts of two calendar days, as tithis do — the night of the 25th is the night of the kheer and the vigil; check your city's panchang for the exact tithi window.
Why is kheer kept in the moonlight?
The belief: the sixteen-kala moon rains amrit tonight, and the kheer receives it. The ayurvedic reading: a cooling milk-rice dish, chilled under the autumn moon, pacifies the season's pitta. Both point to the same morning prasad.
What is Kojagari Lakshmi Puja?
The eastern tradition's Lakshmi night, on this purnima. The goddess is believed to ask "ko jagarti" — who is awake? — and bless the wakeful. Hence the alpana, the naivedya, and a night deliberately passed awake.
Is Sharad Purnima a fasting day?
For many, yes — a purnima vrat through the day, and in Kojagari homes the vigil after it. Others keep no fast and only the kheer custom. Both are established practice; the night's essence is the moon, not the abstinence.
What is my chandra rashi and why does it matter?
The sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Jyotish reads the mind, moods and the daily rashifal from it — it is usually "your rashi" in common speech. Your free kundli shows it instantly, with the Moon's nakshatra and house.
Does the full moon really affect the mind?
Jyotish's claim is about the birth chart: the Moon's condition there describes the mind's temperament, and a purnima-born Moon has full paksha-bala. Tonight's practical use is calmer: look the Moon up in your own chart and see what the shastra reads there — the guru will weigh every factor, not one.
Sharad Purnima and Diwali — how are they related?
They are the bright and dark poles of the same fortnight-pair: Lakshmi is worshipped tonight at the full moon (especially in the east) and again at the Kartik amavasya on Diwali. Between them run Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami and Dhanteras — the season's busiest stretch.
