In 47 daysPitru Paksha
The fortnight of the ancestors — shraddha and tarpan.
Pitru Paksha 2026 begins on Saturday 26 September with the Purnima Shraddha and ends on Saturday 10 October with Sarva Pitru Amavasya — the sixteen-day fortnight of the ancestors, in the dark half of Ashwin, ending the day before Navratri begins. In these days Hindu families offer shraddha, tarpan and pind-daan to three generations of their departed, each on the tithi the ancestor left on. It is a fortnight of remembrance and restraint: no new beginnings, no purchases of auspicious things, simple food, and the daily offering of water and til. This guide covers the 2026 window, whose shraddha falls on which tithi, the tarpan vidhi, what is customarily avoided, and what jyotish actually means by pitru dosha — with the tools to check both the day's tithi and your own chart.

How Kundli.me helps
Shraddha is done on the tithi your ancestor left on — check any date's tithi on our live panchang, and ask the guru what the shastras say about pitru dosha in your kundli.

Pitru Paksha — also called Shraddha Paksha, Mahalaya Paksha or Kanagat — is the fortnight the tradition sets aside for the debt owed to ancestors, the pitru-rin. The belief is simple and old: in these days the pitrs come near, and what is offered to them with faith — water, til, food, remembrance — reaches them. The Mahabharata's Karna, fed only gold in the hereafter because he had given only gold and never food, was allowed back for this fortnight to feed the departed; that story is why food, not wealth, is the offering of these days.
The word shraddha itself comes from shraddha — faith. A shraddha is any rite performed with faith for the departed: at its fullest it is pind-daan at a tirtha like Gaya, Prayagraj or Haridwar; at its simplest it is water poured with til from one's own hands, facing south, with the ancestor's name spoken. Both are shraddha; the fortnight asks for whichever the family can honestly do.
Which tithi is whose shraddha
The governing rule of the fortnight: shraddha is performed on the tithi on which the ancestor passed away — not the calendar date. A grandmother who left on any month's Panchami receives her shraddha on the Panchami of this fortnight. Beyond that rule, certain tithis carry their own assignments, listed below.
| Tithi | Whose shraddha |
|---|---|
| Purnima (opening day) | Those who passed on a Purnima; in many families the rishis and the lineage as a whole |
| Chaturthi–Panchami | Bharani shraddha is kept near here for those who died within the past year (where the family follows it) |
| Navami | Matru Navami — mothers, grandmothers and the family's married women |
| Dwadashi | Sanyasis and those who had renounced the world |
| Chaturdashi | Those who died untimely deaths — accident, weapon or violence |
| Amavasya (closing day) | Sarva Pitru Amavasya — ALL ancestors, and everyone whose tithi is unknown or was missed |
A tithi can double or drop between cities, so the same shraddha can fall a day apart in Delhi and Kolkata. Confirm the tithi for your own city on the live panchang before fixing the rite.
Tarpan at home, step by step
- 1
Prepare
Bathe, wear clean light clothes, and sit facing south — the direction of the pitrs — ideally by flowing water or with a copper vessel of clean water.
- 2
The sacred thread shifts
Those who wear the janeu move it to the right shoulder (apasavya) for all pitru karya — it returns to the left when the rite ends.
- 3
Offer the water
Take water with black til and kusha grass in the joined palms and pour it out through the base of the thumb — the pitru-tirtha of the hand — speaking the ancestor's name and gotra, asking them to accept the tarpan.
- 4
Feed before you eat
On the shraddha day, the first portions of the cooked meal are set aside — for the cow, the crow, the dog and the ant — and a brahmin or a person in need is fed before the family eats. The crow is held to carry the offering to the pitrs.
- 5
Remember
End by remembering the departed by name — their faces, their kindness — and asking their blessings for the family. Shraddha without remembrance is ritual without its heart.
Where no son is available, tradition itself allows the rite by a grandson, brother, nephew — and in living practice today, by daughters. Faith is the operative ingredient, not the performer's gender.
What is customarily avoided
- No new beginnings — weddings, engagements, griha pravesh, mundan, business openings and big purchases (gold, vehicles, property) wait for the fortnight to pass; Navratri opens the auspicious season right after.
- Simple sattvik food at home — onion, garlic, meat and alcohol are set aside in observing families; the kitchen cooks what will also be offered.
- No celebration for its own sake — new clothes, parties and festivities sit oddly in a fortnight of remembrance; mourning is not demanded, but sobriety is.
- Do not turn away the uninvited — a guest, an animal at the door, a person asking for food. In these days especially, tradition treats them as the pitrs testing the household.
These are customs of restraint, not laws of nature — a family emergency, a job joining or a court date in this fortnight is not "doomed". Do what must be done; postpone what can wait.
Pitru dosha — what jyotish actually says
In popular use, "pitru dosha" has become a catch-all threat. In the shastra it is narrower: certain combinations — most centrally the Sun (karaka of the father and the lineage) afflicted by Rahu or Saturn, or the ninth house of dharma and forefathers under malefic hold — are read as the chart carrying an unpaid debt of the lineage. Its classical remedies are exactly what this fortnight prescribes anyway: shraddha done sincerely, tarpan, feeding those in need, and honouring one's living elders — the last being the remedy most quoted and least done.
Whether your own chart carries such a combination is a question of the chart, not of fear. Generate your free kundli and look at the Sun, the ninth house and its lord — or ask the guru, which weighs every sourced factor for the ninth house before it answers, and will tell you plainly if the classical markers are absent.
Shraddha at a tirtha — Gaya, Prayag, Haridwar
The fullest form of the rite is pind-daan at a tirtha, and the texts put Gaya first among them: the Vayu and Garuda Puranas hold that a shraddha at Gaya's Vishnupad — the Falgu riverbank and the Akshaya Vata — releases the line of ancestors as no home rite can, which is why "Gaya karna" became a verb in the family vocabulary of the north. Prayagraj's sangam, Haridwar's Ganga ghats (Narayani Shila), Ujjain's Siddhavat, Nashik's Ramkund and Badrinath's Brahma Kapal hold the same office for their regions. Families who can, travel in this fortnight; the crowds at Gaya during Pitru Paksha are a pilgrimage season of their own — the Pitru Paksha Mela.
Two practical truths sit beside the tirtha's glory. First, the texts themselves say the tirtha multiplies the rite, not replaces its heart — a home tarpan done with faith is complete in itself. Second, a tirtha shraddha can be performed once and "closed" in some family traditions (the Gaya shraddha after which annual rites simplify); whether your lineage follows that is a question for your own elders and purohit, not for a webpage.
The first Pitru Paksha after a death
For a family in its first year of loss, this fortnight lands differently, and the tradition treats it differently. In most lineages the departed formally joins the pitrs only after the first-year rites (the barsi / varshik shraddha) complete; many families therefore do not perform the regular pakshik shraddha for that person in the first Pitru Paksha, or perform it in a modified form the purohit prescribes. Others — particularly where the death fell close to last year's fortnight — are guided to include them at once. There is no single pan-Indian rule here: the honest instruction is to ask the family's own purohit, and let this page only prepare the questions.
What every tradition does agree on: remembrance is never wrong. Water offered with the name, food given in the name, the photograph garlanded, the favourite dish cooked — none of this waits for a ritual clearance, in any school.
The shraddha meal — what is cooked
The shraddha kitchen has its own grammar. Kheer is its centrepiece — rice and milk, the food of the pitrs in every region — with puri, seasonal sabzi, and the ancestor's own favourite dish given pride of place; feeding what they loved is half the remembrance. The meal is cooked sattvik: no onion or garlic in observing homes, and the pans untasted while cooking, since the first right to the food belongs to the pitrs, the panch-bali (cow, crow, dog, ant, and the guest), and the brahmin or needy person fed in their name — in that order, before the family eats.
Regional plates differ — til and rice preparations in the east, kheer-puri in the north, payasam in the south. The constant is the order of feeding, not the menu.
Mahalaya, and the turn to Navratri
The closing Amavasya is Mahalaya — in Bengal, the dawn the Devi is invoked with Mahishasura-mardini chants, the formal countdown to Durga Puja. The sequence is deliberate: the fortnight of the ancestors completes, the debt is paid, and only then does the season of the Goddess begin. In 2026 Sarva Pitru Amavasya falls on Saturday 10 October and Navratri's ghatasthapana follows on Sunday 11 October.
Frequently asked questions
When does Pitru Paksha 2026 start and end?
From Saturday 26 September 2026 (Purnima Shraddha) to Saturday 10 October 2026 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). Navratri begins the next day, 11 October.
I don't know my ancestor's death tithi. What do I do?
That is exactly what Sarva Pitru Amavasya is for — the closing day covers all ancestors, known and unknown tithis alike, and also anyone whose tithi-day you missed during the fortnight.
Can shraddha be done at home, without a pandit?
Yes. Tarpan with water and til, food offered to the cow, crow and a person in need, and sincere remembrance form a complete home shraddha. A pandit and pind-daan at a tirtha add formality, not validity.
Can daughters perform shraddha?
In living practice, yes — and classical texts themselves permit the rite by other relatives when no son exists. The tradition's own first principle is that shraddha done with faith reaches the pitrs; it does not test the performer's gender.
Why are new purchases avoided in Pitru Paksha?
The fortnight is reserved for the ancestors — beginnings belong to the auspicious season that follows. Practically, every big purchase has a better window within weeks: Navratri, Dussehra and Dhanteras follow in quick succession.
What is pitru dosha, in one line?
A chart combination — classically an afflicted Sun or ninth house — read as an unpaid debt of the lineage; its prescribed remedies are shraddha, tarpan, feeding the needy and honouring living elders, not fear.
Is Mahalaya the same as Sarva Pitru Amavasya?
Same day, two lenses: as the fortnight's close it is Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the shraddha for all; in Bengal it is Mahalaya, the dawn of the Devi's invocation that begins the Durga Puja countdown.
I live abroad, far from any river. How do I do shraddha?
Distance changes nothing essential. Bathe, face south, offer water with til from a clean vessel — any clean water standing in for the river — speak the name and gotra, feed someone in need that day (a food-bank donation carries the same intent), and remember. The texts measure the rite by shraddha — faith — which crosses oceans without a visa.
Someone died in our family this year. Do we do shraddha this Pitru Paksha?
Practice differs by lineage: most families wait until the first-year rites complete before the regular pakshik shraddha begins; some include the departed at once. Ask your family's purohit — this is the one question on this page that truly needs your own tradition's answer.
How do I find the exact tithi for my city?
On the live panchang — it computes the tithi, nakshatra and the day's windows for your own city and any date, which matters here because a doubled or dropped tithi can shift a shraddha by a day between cities.
