Dev Uthani Ekadashi

The gods awaken — wedding season opens.

20 days to go

The date follows the tithi in the panchang; when a tithi shortens or lengthens, some places keep the festival a day earlier or later.

Why it is celebrated

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartik, and the name says exactly what happens on it: dev uthani, “the gods rise”. Vishnu is held to sleep on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, four lunar months earlier, and to wake on this day.

The story and belief

Chaturmas is the four-month stretch from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartik — Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik, roughly July to November. Through it, auspicious beginnings are suspended.

The story and belief · continued

It is not a festival; it is a season of restraint, and it is one of the oldest institutions in the tradition.

Main rituals

• Clean and draw
• Stand the sugarcane mandap
• Lay out the new harvest
• Light and offer
• Wake the deity

The vidhi below is the shape kept in most North Indian households.

Across India

• Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana — the courtyard puja with the sugarcane mandap, the drawn charan and the singing that wakes the deity.
• Maharashtra — the same day is kept as Prabodhini Ekadashi and closes the great Pandharpur Wari season.

Customs differ from home to home and region to region; these are the main forms, not a rule everywhere.

Often asked

What is Chaturmas and what is not allowed in it?

Chaturmas is the four lunar months from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Dev Uthani Ekadashi in Kartik — roughly July to November. Weddings, engagements, griha pravesh, mundan, janeu, and in most families property and vehicle purchases and new business openings are set aside during it.

Often asked · answer continued

Worship is not paused at all; some of the biggest festivals of the year fall inside Chaturmas.
